Westgate Mall

Located in the Zimbabwean capital of Harare, Westgate Mall is one of the major tourist attractions in Zimbabwe. It is one of the biggest shopping malls in Southern Africa.

Westgate Mall is the biggest shopping center in Zimbabwe with overall 155 shops and 12 office establishments. The shopping mall is about 13 minutes drive to the west of the Harare city center and is beside Lomagundi Road. Westgate Mall was built and is handled by Old Mutual Life Assurance Company.

Shops inside the mall include garment outlets, a supermarket, a doctor’s private clinic, medicine shops, hardware and electrical shops, a farmers market, movie theaters, children’s playgrounds, furniture shops, banks, a food court, and co-operative housing societies.

The leading shopping mall came into existence and started its operations on March 20, 1997.

Westgate Mall has a powerful market catchment area consisting of low, medium, and high income people.

Westgate Mall is home to the most popular movie theater in the Zimbabwean capital. The movie theater is comparatively new and the ambience is more American. There are allocated seats in the movie theater. Movies are released in Zimbabwe after Europe and America, but the more famous movies are released within one month of their release in the United States. The rate for the tickets is quite reasonable if you switch it into the Zimbabwean currency. You’re getting a ticket, drink, and popcorn only against $3.

In terms of design and growth, Westgate Mall is a landmark among all the shopping centers in Zimbabwe. The mall has created a position for itself and garnered significant popularity from people of all walks of life. Located in the posh western suburbs of Harare, the mall comprises a 155-shop retail compound and satellite office extensions. The plan for this mall was made in the United States of America and it was realized by regional architects Clinton & Evans. The mall has been patterned according to a Mediterranean theme. There are many fountains in the complex. The car parking area is quite spacious, able to accommodate a large number of cars. There are many food courts beside the movie theater. There is a picturesque market garden, a big retail anchor shop, and a banking area as well.

There is also a police outpost and a post office for the convenience of the visitors. The entire complex has temperature regulation system to make the trip to the area an absolutely comfortable one.

Westgate is the biggest single shopping mall in Zimbabwe, and though it showcases the business and capitalistic aspect of contemporary Zimbabwe, it is also a major effort in bringing people from different walks of life to one place.
